Abstract:
The present study ex am ined the inhib itory contro l process ing fo rCh inese-English bilingua l students w ith d ifferent pro fic ient levels using Ch inese and Eng lish S troop vers ions under conditions of in tralingua l ( Chinese-Chinese and Eng lish-Eng lish) and in terlingua l( Chinese-Eng lish and Eng lish-Chinese) interferences. The results show ed ( 1) the interference effect fo r two in tralingua l cond itions was sm alle r for the m ore pro fic ient b ilinguals than for the less pro fic ient ones, ind icating that b ilingual learn ing cou ld enhance the ab ility o f language inh ib ito ry contro l for bilingua ls; ( 2) there w as on d ifferent e ffect o f proficient lev els on the interfe rence of the condition of Ch inese-Eng lish, bu t the mo re pro fic ient b ilingual b ilinguals exh ibited g rea ter inter lingua l in terference on the cond ition o f Ch inese-Eng lish than the less pro fic ient ones did, suggesting that there could be a competitive inh ib ition from the non- targ et language when speaking w ith the targe t language. These resu lts prov ided some m ore d irec t ev idence suppo rting the inh ib itory con tro l ( IC) model invo lv ing lex ica l produc tion in b ilinguals.
